The first in a line of straight to DVD involving features adapted from classic DC stories, Superman: Doomsday re-tells the noteworthy maligned Death of Superman saga from the early 90’s in spicy construct, and despite what many of the negative reviews here say otherwise, it works. The Man of Steel (voiced by Serenity’s Adam Baldwin) is in worship with Lois Lane (voiced quite stiffly by Anne Heche) and both are enjoying their relationship, until his world is rocked by the arrival of the murderous creature Doomsday, who is inadvertantly let loose by Lex Luthor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s James “Spike” Marsters) . If you’ve read the comics, you know what happens next, but the engaging feature wisely ignores the Reign of the Supermen fragment of the arc, in spot of an imposter created by Luthor, which results in an apocalyptic showdown. Being the first in a line of newly entertaining features, don’t go into this expecting something among the lines of the DC lively series’ that had near before it. The animation itself looks similar to what we’ve seen before (former animator Bruce Timm is heavily eager here), but the tone is noticibly different. The converse acting is solid (Marsters is graceful as Luthor, while Baldwin is servicable as Superman) and the action is nicely orchestrated as well, all of which makes Superman: Doomsday an bright treat. This novel two-disc edition has a few unusual features, including episodes from the underrated 90’s Superman spicy series, but there isn’t anything else here that really warrants getting double-dipped for.
I read the book/graphic current over ten years ago, if I remember. This isn’t distinguished like that at all. Superman fights something called Doomsday and dies, then comes serve to life. That’s about all that remains of the unusual memoir.

Gone are the side stories about Superboy and Steel, which were very cold IMHO. Gone also is the challenging fable about how Superman came succor to life. The mechanics gradual how he does so in this DVD are completely different, from what I steal.
Not poor for a fun hour’s watching, but don’t request this to be like the unusual epic.

Others here have done a glowing job of reviewing this salubrious film, so I’ll focus briefly on the DVD from BBC/Warner. The video and audio transfers of Our Mutual Friend are quite well-behaved. Although there are no subtitles, this DVD is closed-captioned. In general, this DVD is of similar quality to other BBC Dickens adaptations that have been released on DVD (e.g., Oliver Twist (1999) and David Copperfield (1999) ) .

One reviewer below complained that 45 minutes or more of the unique film are missing from this DVD. I have no conception where he got that opinion. It must be some kind of misunderstanding or perhaps a despicable copy because my copy clearly has the entire film (divided into four episodes, two on each side of a two-sided disc) . The all-important climax and ending scenes of this 351-minute production are all there to delight in. Highly recommended for Dickens fans and fans of period dramas in general.

If the interplay between Rudd and Segel feels familiar from Apatow comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, it is a coincidence that Hamburg takes plump advantage of to sustain the movie comically provocative. The United States, in general, is quite a homophobic country. Men are expected to have platonic feelings of like only for immediate family members, such as parents, grandparents, siblings and their hold offspring. Sharing one’s nonsexual feelings of appreciate outside this puny world is basically considered taboo. In other cultures this is certainly not the case, something I had the estimable fortune to experience first hand!
I Adore You, Man does a generous job of comparing and contrasting heterosexual women’s emotionally rich, same-sex friendships with heterosexual men’s typically barren, same-sex friendships. It exposes the hypocrisy that it’s okay for women to hug and be emotionally halt and talk in graphic details about their sex lives amongst themselves, but NOT for a man to do the same real thing!
What a refreshing and insightful film! This knowing narrative also compares male homosexual and heterosexual same-sex relationships and on the surface, at least, they are indistinguishable! This might be news to some people - but all well-adjusted human beings have a yearning for emotionally rewarding relationships!
And, one person can not fulfill ALL your emotional needs! It’s really that simple!
Thank you Hollywood for taking such a risk in making such a profound film with a spacious sense of humor! It shows you have a sure segment of the American public is aged enough to want to glance the meaning of platonic cherish between men!

I’ll be the first to admit that I am not as well read as I’d like to be…I was never forced to read Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe in school, so I really can’t content you how great of what was in the book actually made it into the 1952 film, but I suspect a respectable deal probably got lost in the translation given that the unusual new seems exceptionally long (depending on the publisher, it ranges anywhere between 500 to 700 pages) . I really liked this film, and I idea it was too dreadful it wasn’t made a year or two later than it was (the sizable scale usage of Cinemascope was fair around the corner), as it would have benefited greatly with a panoramic showing, especially the gigantic battle scenes. Regardless, some may say they objective don’t invent them like this anymore, and I would tend to agree…oh, they (they being the novel Hollywood system) try, with novel releases of Troy (did anyone else deem Troy was a bit on the homoerotic side? ) and Alexander, but too often those films regain swept up with the tall visuals, forgoing the significant aspect of respectable acting and a decent narrative. Ivanhoe presents both, and in spades. I did feel some of the characters were a bit light (especially that of Elizabeth Taylor’s Rebecca), but given the berth of the recent material, some things obviously had to be minimized or discarded altogether. That being said, I concept the anecdote fairly intricate, featuring a excellent many facets and generous acting that kept me alive to. Robert Taylor did well and oozes the chivalry one would ask from the once nobleman legal to his liege. I especially liked the characters of Prince John, played by Guy Rolfe and Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert, played by George Sanders…they were both equally substandard types that could easily elicit sneers from the audience anytime they appeared on cover (actually, later on, Sanders’ character did seem to have a smattering of what one might call a redemptive quality, but his motives were all screwy, so we didn’t feel poor when he met the ending he did) . Despite the film being thick with epic, it doesn’t lack in the action department. I could actually feel the competitors being shanked off their horses during the jousting scenes, the castle siege approach the waste was done extremely well, as was the fierce, end quarters battle between Wilfred and Sir Brian. And if you’re one for the ladies, Ms. Fontaine and Ms. Taylor (who seemed a bit lackluster in her performance, but then a lackluster Elizabeth Taylor performance is smooth better than most) provide plenty of beauty, along with their other talents (sight for the scene where Ms. Taylor’s character is on trial…she possessed an unparalleled level of hotness in that chunky length white dress) . This is one of those films that clicks on all cylinders, as all the elements (the rich and vibrant color cinematography, pleasurable musical fetch, acting, costumes, etc.) work together well to perform a wonderfully enchanting waste result.

Nope, it didn’t. And the past catches up to the peaceful afroed warrior in a gargantuan intention in “Afro Samurai: Resurrection” — a wildly stylized, bloodsoaked, wildly anachronistic memoir of what will happen after you obtain your gory revenge. That would create for a tiresome movie, so suddenly Kumo and the sexy, sadistic Sio appear, and engage both Afro’s No. 1 headband and his father’s remains. With his sword reforged, Afro sets out to reclaim the No. 2 headband so he can challenge Sio, and cessation her from resurrecting his father (impartial so she can torture him) .
But regaining the headband leads to a poor cost — a respectable man with a microscopic son, shocked by the headband’s bloody legacy. Like “Samurai Champloo,” “Afro Samurai” is a stylized legend that wears its hip-hop trappings and period Japanese flavour like badges of honor. Or headbands. Whichever. The genuine record is rather thin, but it carries a heavy message about revenge — one you rep it, it will haunt you like a bloody ghost forever and inferior others along the draw. Ninja Ninja provides a runt humor (”I’m gonna die, man! Or at least have a stroke… I Loathe HEIGHTS!”) but it can’t lighten the storyline.
“Afro Samurai: Resurrection” doesn’t beget itself succor on the fights — neatly sliced bodies, fountains and rivers of blood, savage beatings and some really creepy cybernetic/masked baddies who are unafraid to accumulate dirty. The highlight is a balletic nighttime duel between Afro and Shichigoro, surrounded by deadly chains and blooming lanterns, and framed by fireworks reflected in the water.
And it leaves the procedure paved for a third “Afro Samurai” epic. I’m waiting.
Most regular actors are dreadful at voice-acting, but Samuel L Jackson could easily fabricate a living at it if he wanted to — both the deep, gravelly roar (”Spy… your damn… MOUTH”) and the annoying deliver of Ninja Ninja. And Afro serves as an ample anti-hero, who does some truly bad things but is willing to pay for them.

I have now seen two other versions of The Secret Garden, and this one (the first I ever saw) Remains my accepted. The reason is I have a couple problems with the other versions
In the worn 1949 Edition, Mary wasn’t portrayed correctly. She’s supposed to be (at the beginning) a girl with an attitude (for lack of a better diagram to effect it.) She’s supposed to be completely emotionally unnafected by her parent’s death (according to the book) as they had never attempted to use time with her. In the ragged 1949 version, Mary has an emotional outburst upon learning of her parent’s death. That is out of charachter. In this version, she’s more concerned about the doll she dropped when she was told. Her attitude in this 1987 version seems more in charachter.

In the 1993 version I do not like the arrangement they took the notion of “magic” and curved it into a seance in the garden. That is extremely out of charachter with the book. When the book speaks of “Magic” it almost hints at miricles/the hand of God. This 1987 movie kept in charachter with that.
Basically, I deem this version is truer to the mysterious (in a estimable design) tone of the book. the manor is gorgeous! and the whole scenery is in charachter with the book. The only thing they contradicted the book in was having Mary and Colin not related. In the book they’re cousins. But in this version they’re unrelated, which is obviously because they have Mary and Colin getting married. The only thing I would change is the actors that played the two boys, Colin and Dicken. They were blooming trustworthy actors, but both were too ragged. Dickon should have been someone more Mary’s age, and the actor that played Colin (although he has a sufficient baby face) reveals his proper age at the kill when he can stand up and rush. Procedure too huge. Discover at the scene with him and his father walking together in the garden. Colin’s device to colossal to be 10 (his supposed age) . i’ve seen this movie at least 200 times since i was seven years traditional, and though i’ve had to bewitch it more than once… i collected esteem it! the beautifully romantic soundtrack gives you a soulful sage of what’s happening in the narrative, and the very talented director found some of the most talented actors that played their parts beautifully. it’s a staple of my beget film collection, and i hope everyone sees it at least once!

By today’s standards, this may not be considered an outrageously comic movie - wait on in the day, I can recognize that this would have been hilarious. I really cherish Jerry Lewis and it’s one of the better roles I’ve seen him in. He doesn’t have too great of a dialogue in this - whenever he is playing the bellboy character Stanley, he only whistles and uses his facial expressions to emote his clumsiness.
The only scene where I truly laughed out loud, was when he was in charge of the bellboy desk for a short time and one of the four phones would ring. Do you mediate he knew which phone to respond? Of course not. Other than that, it was beneficial throughout but fair not as humorous as I would have hoped. He is a genius for positive, but I hold him doing his crazy voices. Even so, I’d recommed this to his fans, as I’m determined they’ll definately be pleased it.

This film occurred when Jerry Lewis needed a summer movie, Paramount wanted to release “Cinderfella”, but Lewis insisted that wait for the Christmas season. Like so many other reviewers here, I grew up with this annual treat, and the DVD renews fond memories. But this particular TV special did something remarkable more indispensable for me in the long run–it got me fervent in reading. I read the Dickens tale as a result of watching it, and that led to a lifelong worship of the written word. I’m a novelist now, and I owe it all to Mr. Magoo!

PARENTS, Engage NOTE: The anecdote is terrific, the songs are appetizing, and every kid loves Mr. Magoo. And it manages to collect the sure love-thy-neighbor message across in 52 piquant minutes, with every noted moment and well-known line intact–a lot easier on smaller children than the many 2-hour movie versions with live actors. Try parking your kids in front of this. Maybe they will do what I did and advance for the book. And inspect it with them–it really is splendid, and you’ll relish it, too.
I can level-headed remember sitting and watching “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol” at my grandparent’s house during the Christmas season when I was a kid. This DVD brings befriend so many fond memories. While the animation may seem simple by some of today’s standards the entire production is first rate! From the adaptation of a classic narrative, to the songs written for the cartoon, to allege talents and performances it is all top quality and will be enjoyed by both children and adults! When I got this DVD, I introduced it to my kids and it has become a Christmas tradition (along with A Charlie Brown Christmas) . Highly recommended!
